Goodbye to Bingo Baloo
(December 12, 2005)

Bingo was not feeling well at all last week, so on Monday we took her to the vet.

The doc took X-rays and unfortunately, they showed that Bingo Baloo had eaten at least two open staples.

Here you can see them in her gizzard. Ouch!

Here is another view of them. The other non-metal pieces are small pebbles, which ducks eat to help grind up food.

Bingo got baytril antibiotics and twice-daily injections of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) which helps keep the zinc coating on the staples from hurting the kidneys or other organs.

By Wednesday, Bingo was back at the vet because she wasn't eating at all. She did seem to be perkier though, and her eyes were bright.

Even though she wasn't eating, she was drinking water, which was a good sign.

We left the vet on Wednesday with instructions on tube feeding and "critical care" food formula. We also got an estimate for surgical removal of the staples, which would cost between $670-$1340.

Unfortunately, Bingo took a fast turn for the worse on Friday. She wasn't moving and she seemed very uncomfortable.

Bingo was put down by a veterinarian at the after-hours clinic on Friday night. I'm so sorry, sweet Bingo.

We are keeping your stocking on the mantle, Bingo. But are sure going to miss you.

Here is a little look back at the short life of Bingo Baloo...

Bingo was one of Flapper & Georgie's three spring ducklings.

She hatched on May 13th, 2005, along with her big brother Kozmo Kirby and sister Miss Murphy. (Bingo is the yellow one on the bottom right).

Bingo was her momma Georgie's favorite duckling. The only one who got to hang out with her in the yard.

Bingo liked to hang out with her sister, Miss Murphy, too.

Bingo made more friends at summer camp, at the Forest Park Animal Farm's duck exhibit.

She was a pretty, sweet girl who will be missed very much.

Her brother Kozmo Kirby & sister Miss Murphy will have to get along without her now.

Rest in peace, Bingo Baloo.

Special thanks to the Bird & Exotic Clinic of Seattle, and the Access after-hours clinic, for all their help.

:: stay tuned ::
