Road Trip
(December 29, 2006)

Flapper? I need you to be in charge of your pen and make sure everyone behaves while I'm out of town for a day, okay?

"Okay, mom. Roger that. Flapper in charge."

"Don't leave me, Mom."
I will only be gone a day, O'Malley. But I will miss you. Be good while I'm away. I'm going to go visit some duckies (and humans) in Oregon.

Hop in the car, Riley. You're coming along.

We're here! We drove 198 miles from Seattle to just past Portland to visit fellow duck nut, Terrie, and her flock. Let's go in and see who we meet!

"Whoa, I don't know about this mom."
It's okay, Riley. Just keep your distance. They're not used to ducks like you.
Bella? Do you think it's okay if Riley stays for a bit? If she's nice and just eats poo?

"As long as she stays over there. I don't want to have to get Broose the Goose."
Okay, thanks Bella. Riley you stay here and I'll go meet the flock.

First we have to meet Miss Matilda, Flapper's long-distance pekin duck girlfriend. Isn't she cute? She's a rescued duck who spent time with a duck nut in California before making her way to Oregon. She has leg and foot problems but gets around just fine anyway.

This is the famous Gumby, a muscovy drake like my O'Malley. He is quite a charmer and has beautiful eyes, don't you think?

This is Irma La Goose. I love her pretty neck feather folds and orange eyeliner.

Here she shows us how she can really get flappin', just like Flapper.

Speckled Roo the Rooster is all business. He keeps the hens in line and makes sure everyone knows it's morning.

" IT'S MORNING EVERYONE!"

Whoa, look Riley. This chicken, Peanut, looks more like you than the other chickens. Pretty furry feathers, eh?

"So did you bring us any treats?"
Uh oh, I uh... OH LOOK, Terrie has some!

"Time for treats, yay!"

Here Bella eats cheerios right out of Terrie's hand, while the chickens pick at the fallen O's.

This is Lucky Duck, a beautiful rescued girl, and she has a very special talent.

She catches Cheerios in mid-air, not once in a while, but nearly every time. This photo was on her 8th Cheerio in a row. Nice work, Lucky!

Broose the Goose is HUGE compared to any of our flock. Look how much taller he is than everybody else. Wow! Lookin' good, Broose.

See? That boy's a tall drink of water.

Last, but not least, is my new friend Mobert, the muscovy drake.

Isn't he handsome?

He and I became good friends on the trip. He's such an affectionate, sweet guy.

He's a good preener too. Thanks for the preening, Mobert! I could have done without the corn scratch in my ear though.

Thank you, Bella, for letting us visit and spend time with you and your flock. We had a great time, even Riley.

Meanwhile, inside...

Missy Marie the cat was a great hostess to my dog Riley.

She let Riley crash on her floor, and didn't even mind when Riley ate all her food - not once, but TWICE.

"Do you think Terrie and Bob and Missie and the flock will miss me when I go?"
Oh Riley, I'm sure they will. But at least they have the lingering smell of you to comfort them. (We won't even mention what you did to the carpet.)

THANK YOU to Terrie for being such a great hostess. I had a wonderful time and can't wait to do it again! Hold on tight to Mobert so I don't steal him. :)

Even more photos of Terrie's flock were uploaded to my flickr files.
You can view them here.
