Goodbye to Riley - and - Help for Eddie
(January 28, 2008)

On January 23rd, my sweet Riley Roo passed away.

Her veterinarians found she had a 6cm diameter tumor on her liver that was displacing her stomach. She couldn't keep any food down anymore, so it was time to say goodbye. Riley was a super sweet pup and I am going to miss her dearly. Let's look back and remember a few moments from her time with us.

Riley came to stay with us in May of 2005.

O'Malley really loved Riley and liked to hang out with her in the yard. Later, Chewy also loved Riley. Riley probably would have preferred that the ducks NOT love her, but she put up with them like a real trooper.

Riley's favorite thing to do was nap on the couch. She was already 8 or 9-years-old when she came to live with us, so she was an expert napper.

Riley would pose for pretty much any photo as long as she didn't have to get up off of the couch. Here she poses in lights for the family holiday card.

Riley was also good at howling at sirens and cuddling.

Riley had lost a little weight in the past year, which had been good for her bum knee. She was able to stand up to the counter and reach the cat food as well as jump up on the bed again. Here she looks longingly at my breakfast.

Riley was never very fond of rides in the car, until we found an espresso drive-thru that gave out dog biscuits. Riley loved to ride in the car after that, as long as biscuits were involved. In fact, I had to start carrying biscuits in the car for whenever we hit a drive-thru that wasn't prepared with treats for Riley.

Riley Roo, you were a great little short dog and I love you girl. I hope you are somewhere enjoying an all-you-can-eat duck poo buffet and finally catching that laser light you chased for so long (between naps on the perfect couch of course).

Rest in Peace sweet pup.

In other news...

My buddy Flapper was sick last week too.

He took two trips to the vet and started some antibiotics. They were afraid he might have a mass in his abdomen.

After antibiotics and some quality time on the couch, Flapper started feeling much better.

At his follow-up trip to the vet they couldn't detect a mass and decided to just keep a close eye on him and hope it was just an infection for now.

Flapper celebrated his recovery with his favorite treat.

French fries (in moderation).

I'm glad you're feeling better little buddy. I don't think I could stand to lose you after losing Riley Roo.

I know Flapper is feeling just fine because he's back to chasing Chewy.

"My belly feels much better. Those french fries must have done the trick."

Also new this week...

Eddie the super cute call duck came to stay with us until he can make it to his forever home.

Eddie was turned in to the Seattle Animal Shelter who gave him to PAWS to rehabilitate for release to the wild. But since PAWS knows Eddie isn't a wild duck and can't be released to the wild, he needed a secure setting and a friendly forever home. In addition to being domestic, Eddie was also likely hand-raised because he is very imprinted on humans.

Thankfully, Eddie found a home really fast. Eddie will be going to live with Todd & Janis in Phoenix, AZ. They have two sweet domestic girl ducks who need a good buddy like Eddie to keep them company. (In this photo, Todd & Kozmo and Janis & Chewy hang out at Flapper's house).

Janis, Todd, Daisy (back) and Dewey (front) will be a great family for Eddie, but we need a little help transporting Eddie to his new home.

Eddie needs a health certificate from the veterinarian to travel to his new home. And he'll also need funds for his flight.

If you can spare a few dollars to help Eddie, we've placed a donate button below. We'll also be tracking Eddie's donations until his flight on February 17th.

Donate to Eddie's Adoption Fund to help pay his veterinary check-up bill and his flight from Seattle to Phoenix.

UPDATE: WOW! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who donated to Eddie's transportation and veterinarian fund. He passed his health exam today with flying colors and has his ticket to fly. Everyone's generosity is SO appreciated. Thank you for making a difference in this one little life. He will fly to his new home on February 17th, riding in the cabin with me as his escort. I will post another update when Eddie reaches his new home. XOXOX, Tiff

In survey news...

The latest results are in for the most recent survey. With 24 votes, the majority correctly guessed O'Malley Peepers is the MOST hard-biting biter duck.

And lastly, special thanks...

A very special thanks goes out to our friend Peter in the Netherlands. He created this wonderful memorial illustration after hearing of Riley's passing. Thank you, Peter. It's just beautiful and captures her pig-dog shape and spirit perfectly.
