Offended

Cover my ears!, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Mom is covering my ears to protect them from the bad, bad words of Dr. Ford. He is one of my veterinarians. He is cool… BUT today when he was talking about me he accidentally said something like “you can put the injection about one inch to the left or right of the keel, in the breast meat.”

Breast MEAT!

Mom gasped and covered my ears but it was too late. I totally heard him. She promised me he meant breast muscle but I think he owes me an apology and I’d like you to vote on it. I made a survey for you to vote right here:

Offended

Thank you for voting. I hope you voted to protect my ears from offensive words like… I can’t even say it again. Just vote please.

NOTE: This photo is a dramatic reenactment of when I was offended.

Boswell the Goose

This is a video of Boswell the Goose. He also has his own blog, in response to all the well-deserved publicity he is getting. If you’d like to view his blog, you can find it at:

By the way, Boswell? If you see this… you’re not fat or even big. It’s called “high wing load” buddy. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Goodbye, sweet Kozmo

goodbye
Monday night at 9pm, Kozmo Kirby lost his long battle with cancer. He had seemed a little more uncomfortable in the last few days, and this evening, he was clearly in pain and was having trouble breathing. So sadly, it was time to say goodbye.

baby koz
Kozmo Kirby was born on May 13, 2005 along with his two sisters, Bingo Baloo and Miss Murphy.

family
Kozmo was the last remaining duckling of Georgie and Flapper’s only hatch at home. Their two girls passed away from different problems in December 2005.

teenager
Kozmo grew fast and had many of the mannerisms of his papa Flapper.

do you
Kozmo was always up for treats, and always asked for seconds. He could shovel in treats like nobody’s business.

monster
In no time at all, Kozmo grew up to be a monster-sized ducky with a stylish toupee.

favorite
He was a favorite of the ladies and always threw great pool parties.

sweet
He was a super sweet duck. He was always gentle and sensitive.

strong
He was a super strong duck. He was the biggest guy on the block.

blue eyes
And he had the most beautiful blue eyes.

watermelon
Tonight before he passed away, he had a short splash in the pond and one of his very favorite treats, watermelon.

Kozmo
Kozmo had a rough last three months, but we prefer to remember him as the big strong lovable lug he was for so long, and will always be in our hearts. Thank you so much to everyone who sent him well-wishes, hope and even treats. It made a big difference.

Goodbye, sweet Kozmo. I love you and I’ll miss you so much.

memorial
In honor of Kozmo, we’re creating a fund in his memory, to help future rescued ducks who need veterinary care or help with transport. It’s nothing fancy, but any money donated in his name will be reserved solely for helping more ducks. He would have loved the idea, as long as he didn’t have to share his treats.

For anyone who would like to contribute to the fund in Kozmo’s memory, you can use the paypal donate link below.

Swimmin’

Swimmin’, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Chewy and I took a dip in the duck pond this afternoon, to try to beat the heat. Flapper swam with me too, but he attacked my toes too much so I had to kick him out of the pool.

kozmo scratch n’ treats

kozmo scratch n’ treats, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Kozmo gets his head scratched and then gets his corn treats. At the end of the video you can hear O’Malley and Flapper closing in while Kozmo shovels in as much corn as he can eat before they try to steal it.

Kozzy is a good conversationalist and a good listener, as you can see.

Hmmm

Hmmm, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Kozmo ponders more treats. These days his favorite treat is a few handfuls of corn. We get unsalted canned corn for him. Nom nom nom.

Kozmo’s biopsy results came back today, and unfortunately there were no magical surprises. He is indeed on borrowed time. He has a very large seminoma tumor that is already affecting his other organs. The vets don’t recommend trying to remove it or treat it, because it’s too involved and too far gone. But… at least he’s done with vets poking at him. And after almost 3 months of various tests, treatments and ideas, the biopsy results were conclusive this time. So he lasted long enough for them to find out what’s killing him.

I mentioned to the vet that his one staple and many stitches could come out today and the vet said “I like to see surgery patients for a follow up to make sure they’re doing well.”

I replied, “Well we already know he’s not doing well, right? So you don’t really need to see him again.”

I don’t want to drag him back to the vet anymore. He’s had enough of them. So I removed the staple and some stitches myself. I left 2 stitches for another day or so… they didn’t look quite ready to come out. Kozmo had a great time splashing in the pond tonight and ate some extra corn treats as well as his normal duck crumble dinner.

He seemed happy as could be this evening, and didn’t even want me to preen his face for him because he wanted to do it himself. I feel like I’m kind of dragging out his long goodbye… but I don’t want to see him go yet. He’s not in pain right now and he seems pretty happy. So while it may be sad to see him go soon, let’s all try to enjoy the time we have left with him, okay? We’ll save the goodbyes for another day.

Corn treats all around. And three cheers for Kozzy.

Flapper & family would like to wish heartfelt condolences to Pansy and Greg for the loss of their beautiful duck Quack Quack.
Quack Quack
Their special duck/kid Quack Quack lived to be 9-years and 18-days-old, which is really good for a ducky. Quack Quack is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed. All the best to Pansy and Greg during this difficult time. We’re so sorry for your loss.

Thanks

Thanks, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Kozmo thanked me for scratching all his head feathers tonight. He sits on my lap each evening and we scratch and fluff his head, cheeks, chin and neck. It seems to perk him up and I’ll bet it feels great. Now that his legs don’t work, he can’t do it himself. So I’m his scratch helper.

He is doing okay after his second biopsy. The wound was much bigger and will take longer to heal. But it’s healing. The results of his biopsy aren’t back yet. We know he has a huge mass, so I’m not quite sure if the results will matter at all. The vets didn’t sound very confident about being able to remove the mass. If they’re not confident, I’m not all that confident in letting them even try to remove it. Kozmo seems pain-free and happy-go-lucky, so that’s good enough for now.

When we get the biopsy results we’ll post another update.

Tiff

Happy Couple

Happy Couple, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Today I went to see Ms Bruiser, a beautiful pekin girl who we placed in a new forever home in early June. She and four other rescued ducks now live together in a great forever home. Ms Bruiser used to be very imprinted on humans and in fact had never seen another duck until she stayed at Flapper’s house for a few weeks in May. Now five weeks later… she knows she is a duck. It’s pretty cool to see her so well-adjusted and loving being a duck. She has a pekin boyfriend now who loves her dearly, and they are all doing great in their new forever home.

It was a little sad to see her less friendly with me, but it’s definitely for the best. She came over to see me very briefly, bit me, and let me pick her up and kiss her head. Then she went right back to her big boyfriend. It’s the perfect “Independence Day” because Ms Bruiser has truly learned to be a duck and not to depend on humans so much anymore. Happy Independence Day, Ms. Bruiser.

Quacked Up

Duck in car, originally uploaded by quacker4duck.

You may think I’m koo koo for ducks, but rest assured… I’m not alone.

This is my friend driving a pekin home to a sanctuary. She didn’t have any crates with her, so she held him and let him drive. He’s wearing his seat belt though, so it’s okay – safety first!

This guy was freshly dumped at a park by a not-so-bright human, and wouldn’t have survived there long. Now he has a good chance of finding a forever home.
