home from the demonstration

Well, Flapper and I are home from the demonstration at Lark restaurant. We went there to say “thank you” to all the nice people from the Northwest Animal Rights Network (http://www.narn.org) who spend their Friday nights trying to reduce the suffering of animals by asking Lark to remove foie gras from their menu.

I have to say, Flapper did SO well. In fact, I was a little bit of a stress puppy, but Flapper was pretty chill. He got a tiny bit stressed when I moved from one spot to another, but he settled right back down and let everyone pet him and talk to him. We sat right at the entrance to Lark restaurant so people who came and left could see what a healthy, happy duck looks like… as opposed to the ducks who are tortured and suffer so Lark can serve foie gras (swollen, diseased liver) on their menu.

What did you think of the demonstration tonight, Flapper?

nom
“Nom nom nom, these fries are good.”

one
“One more fry and then I’ll talk.”

ok
“Okay. I thought the people were nice. They took a lot of photos of me and I can totally understand that. I’m photogenic! They touched and petted me, which was fine… but now I have to wash off all these human cooties.”

That sounds about right, Flapper. What did you think of that cranky guy who mouthed off to the nice animal rights people?

mm
“Mm… I don’t know. What did you think?”

I thought he was a douchebag, personally.
“Ha ha ha ha ha ha.”
Sorry for the strong language, Flapper. But he really was. I kept thinking of him all the way home. When he and his wife walked up to the restaurant, and the demonstrator tried to hand him a pamphlet… he was just rude and mean to swear and mouth off like that. Even his wife was trying to get him to shut up. I just kept thinking… what a douchebag, you know? All these nice people with purpose and meaning in their lives are spending their Friday nights to reduce suffering for animals. And that guy? He probably just sucked air all day and then mouthed off.

duck
“He probably needs to spend more time with ducks.”
Yeah, you could be right, Flapper.

Anyway… forget about him. I was really proud of you tonight, Flapper. You did really great and didn’t get stressed out a bit. Except for when you fell asleep on the job, I think you did really well. Let’s try it again another Friday night, okay buster?

“Do I get fries again?”
kiss
Definitely. Mwah. G’nite buster.

We didn’t take any photos but I am sure people who did will share them with us. So when I can get a few, I’ll post them to the blog. Very special thanks to everyone from NARN who showed up tonight (and other nights) to help reduce suffering for animals. It’s great to meet people who have purpose and passion and take the time to make a difference.

Thank you.

NOTE: Flapper gets a handful of fries a few times a year as a treat. He really loves them, but they’re not great for him. So he only gets them sparingly and in moderation.

Flapper Thanks Foie Gras Protestors

flap
Friday evening (April 17th), Flapper will join a group of good eggs who are trying to get foie gras banned from Seattle restaurants. If you don’t know how foie gras is made, be warned… it’s one of the cruelest forms of animal torture out there. And it passes as a “delicacy” in fine restaurants. Here is a link to a video inside Hudson Valley Farms, the largest seller of foie gras in the US.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNJDZm1bgVA
WARNING: It’s a very graphic video.

Foie gras is fatty duck or goose liver. Ducks & geese are force-fed many times a day, an enormous amount of food. This causes their livers to grow to 10-TIMES their normal size from swelling and disease. Then the ducks are slaughtered for this “delicacy.” Read more about it from the Humane Society’s website:

http://www.hsus.org/farm/resources/research/welfare/the_foie_gras_industry.html

The Northwest Animal Rights Network (http://www.narn.org) has been protesting a local Seattle restaurant called Lark every Friday evening, to convince them to take foie gras off of their menu. Lark has so far resisted, but they have said they will take the public’s opinion into consideration.

Since Lark is taking the public’s reaction into account in continuing to serve foie gras, please contact Lark and let them know that you would like to see them remove it from their menu. Taking two minutes to do this will really make a difference for the ducks and geese who are force fed to create this cruel product.

Tel: (206) 323-5275
Email: info@LarkSeattle.com

Flapper will drop by the protest this Friday evening to thank the good eggs who help prevent cruelty to his fellow feathered friends. If Flapper likes his visit, we’ll probably do it again. If not, I’ve promised him some french fries on the way home.

Special thanks to all the good eggs who are working to prevent cruelty to animals. We’ll report back after the protest to let you know what Flapper thought of it.

Flapper’s Advice on Hockey

A Flapper fan wrote us an email today to ask advice on a very important matter:

“It’s hockey playoff season – which you may not be aware of being a Seattle duck. BUT a friend of mine has said she’ll root for the Canucks (Vancouver, BC’s team) if I root for the Sharks. The thing here is.. the Sharks are playing the San Anaheim DUCKS.. and I’m torn. Is a loyal fan of the Flapper Family Blog allowed to cheer against a team named after ducks? Thank you for any insight you can offer!”

flap
What do you think, Flapper?
“Hmmm… I do not like sharks. There are not any sharks in my pond, are there?”
No, Flapper. I think your pond is safe.
“Okay then. My advice is to ask the friend for french fries.”
But it’s okay to root for sharks then?
“If I get french fries, yes.”

Makes perfect sense, Flapper. Hope that helps, hockey fans!

Thanks for the email.

Happy Jack

Jake the drake, also known as “Happy Jack,” had a re-check at the vet today. I think he has a little problem with his eye, but he is otherwise doing well. He should be ready to adopt out to a forever home soon. We don’t have him, but donations to Kozmo Kirby’s Memorial Fund helped him get the vet care he needed.

So thank you again for your support. Happy Jack thanks you, too.

Sam the Fix-It Man

hello
“Hello.”

“Hmm… I don’t think that looks right.”
this
What doesn’t look right, Sam?
“Follow me.”

up
“See these plants? They’re growing straight up.”
Yes, I do see that, Sam. What about it?

stomp
“I will stomp them down for you.”
Oh gee, Sam. Thank you so much, buddy.

welcome
“You’re welcome. Any time.”

I am alive and everything is good

Funny… I’ve received two emails today asking if everything is okay. I didn’t realize a few days without a post would spook people. So…

1. I am fine.
2. Everything is okay.
3. Duckies are good.

I have been extra busy with work, and worked most of the weekend. Plus it rained literally ALL weekend. Torrential downpours most of the day both days. Not exactly the best weather for photos.

The ducks are doing well, and they enjoyed the break in the rain this evening. They are pretty funny all together, and all seem to be learning to keep their own space. Lily and Petunia alerted us to a neighbor cat tonight, which was pretty funny. Lily makes a cute “alert” sound that drowns out Petunia’s quiet alert. Sam has decided he loves Flapper’s big pond, but Flapper has decided Sam is not allowed in the big pond. So Flapper hogs it and Sam does laps around it, hoping to get his chance to swim. When we hold Flapper, Sam finally gets his chance. Chewy avoids Sam because Sam picks on him. So he’s his usual independent self. Everyone avoids O’Malley because he’s a bitey dinosaur duck.

More updates soon, I promise.

New Mr. Dodo Update

Just got this new note from Mr. Dodo’s new family:

Here’s a few pictures of Mr. Dodo and his harem.

d1
He is really content – eating grass, bugs and flies to his heart’s content. He’s also feeling a little spring fever.

all3
I caught him in an amorous moment with Fling the other day in the pond. I think the bio-dynamics of that encounter may leave a bit to be desired, but he was valiantly trying nonetheless.

Juno is getting new feathers after a serious bout of molting. I’m waiting to check her wings out once the feathers come in a little more.

side
All 3 continue to get along like they have always been together. It’s a joy to see them all so happy.

d2
Take care and keep up the good work.

Sam’s Funny Joke

Tonight Sam was sitting on my lap for a bit while the other ducks hung out in the yard and in the aviary. Petunia was standing on the edge of the big pond, getting a sip of water.

I put Sam down and he immediately sneaked up on Petunia and lunged at her. She hopped up in fright and landed right in the middle of the pond.

I burst out laughing and I swear Sam did, too.

Petunia had a look of fury and rage I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. She jumped out of the pond and chased FULL SPEED after Sam. He took off running while we were both still laughing. I talked Petunia into letting Sam go, for now. It went something like “No no, Petunia! Don’t hurt him!”

She didn’t hurt him. But you know she won’t forgive him.

Muscovy hens do not take kindly to jokesters.

Very funny joke, Sam. You crack me up.

Spring Fever

weather
We finally have some good weather here in Seattle, and the ducks are loving it. Petunia and O’Malley went bug hunting together.

posing
Flapper tried his best to impress Petunia.

best side
While Chewy just showed her his best side: the Choo Choo caboose.

drake feathers
Both Flapper & Chewy are sporting new drake feathers, too.

pool
Unfortunately I don’t think Petunia was impressed… or maybe she’s just playing it cool.

which
Which do you think it is, O’Malley? Is Petunia unimpressed or is she playing it cool?

don't
“I’m not answering that. I’m on her good side.”

Good point, O’Malley. Some questions are better left unanswered.

wise
“She is wise. I wonder if she gives lessons.”

Petunia & Sam (and Lily)

Petunia just looooves giving Sam a hard time. And he loves to give it right back to her. She stands and chirps at him menacingly while he tries to find a way through the fence to bite her.

chirp
Petunia chirped at Sam so long yesterday that she finally wore herself out.

sat
So she sat down to conserve energy so she could continue to chirp at Sam. He also enjoyed this as he could reach under the chicken wire and poke her in the chest.

I think they secretly like each other, but just don’t want to admit it yet.

sam and lily
Sam and Lily are both still doing well and seem to be improving. Sam still has balance issues and rocks back on his feet a lot. Lily is just missing a ton of feathers, but otherwise seems good. She eats a ton of eggshells and oyster shell to regain some nutrition, in addition to her duck food and treats.

sam
Sam will go back to the vet in a couple of weeks to make sure he’s gaining weight and make sure his infection is gone.

lily
Lily doesn’t have to go back soon, she just has to regrow those feathers and continue to gain weight.

lily
Lily is a super sweet girl and likes to sit on my lap. She comes when I call her and both of them are really good now at going into their pen when I ask them to. We’re happy to have them here, and hope they continue to improve.
