Introducing the Georgie Memorial Aviary

aviary
The aviary is finally done!

Back in November 2008, we lost our sweet girl Georgie to a raccoon attack at 1pm in the afternoon. Petunia was injured, but recovered. Since then, we’ve been planning all winter for a huge aviary to keep the ducks safe during the day while they forage, swim and snooze. They’ve always had predator-proof night pens, but now they can swim, preen and nap in safety in their new day aviary.

monday
Monday will be the first full day that the ducks spend in the aviary. It is divided into two sections, since O’Malley is a bit of a bitey dinosaur and can really do some damage when he gets angry.

mal
This is O’Malley and Petunia’s section of the aviary. I estimate it is about 350 square feet. They have a big fisher shrub to snooze under, and a pre-formed pond to swim in. There is lots of grass to gnaw on as well.

flap
This is Flapper, Chewy, Sam & Lily’s side of the aviary. They have about 500 square feet including some new duck-proof plants, the larger pre-formed pond and a few nesting areas. Some of their area is muddy right now, because their night pens used to be here. We relocated them to another side of the yard before building the aviary. Now we’re seeding this part with high-traffic grass, so it should be green in a few weeks.

You can kind of see the dividing line in black, for the see-thru fencing that keeps O’Malley the biter in his own area with Petunia.

nesting
Flapper is already practicing his nesting next to the new pampas grass.

aviary
The aviary is constructed of vinyl-covered chain link fencing that is dug into a deep trench into the ground, so predators cannot dig under it. Then the top is covered with heavy-weight knitted aviary netting. All along the lower 3 feet of the pen is hardware cloth, so raccoons cannot reach through the chain link to grab the ducks. The aviary is also protected on 2 sides by a retaining wall and by the deck on a 3rd side. Under the two gates we have buried 8″ bricks so raccoons cannot dig under the gates. The gates also have hardware cloth on the lower 3-feet (though they didn’t have it yet in these photos). There are padlocks on the gates as well, when we’re not around.

We still need to create an area for the ducks to seek shelter from the rain, especially on Flapper’s side. We also need to take the post caps down and spray paint them black. But the aviary is secure and awesome and I couldn’t be happier, now that the ducks can spend all spring and summer enjoying life in the yard without worrying about predators.

I’m still sad about losing Georgie. It was one of the worst days of my life. I regret letting the ducks roam the yard during the day hours, even though we went over 4 years without incident. I’d take it all back to have Georgie here again. I still have nightmares about that day, and carry guilt over leaving Georgie to suffer such a terrible fate.

There are bright spots now though. The ducks have recovered completely after losing Georgie. They no longer startle easily, and they nap in peace and feel completely safe now. O’Malley loves Petunia and she loves him, too. Flapper and Chewy have grown closer, and we’ve added Sam & Lily to the mix. Sam has a little drake-crush on Flapper, and has decided he is his new good buddy. Lily follows Chewy around and he doesn’t mind a bit.

There is life and love and fun in the yard again, and the aviary will ensure it stays that way. I hereby christen the new aviary the “Georgie Memorial Aviary” for wayward ducks.

holiday ornaments

wonderful
Look at the wonderful tree ornaments we received this week!

neat
These are just awesome. I am loving them.

act
I did not get my act together this year to have a tree, but they’re ornaments worthy of being out all year.

mobile
So until we get a holiday tree NEXT year, I’ve strung all of the duck ornaments together as a mobile, and hung it on the lamp in the living room where I can see it all the time.

Thanks SO MUCH to Wayne & Dawn in NYC for the very, very throughtful holiday gift. I love these ornaments!

Aren’t they just wonderful?

Flapper’s Holiday Gift Idea

Hey, Flapper. You look pretty serious. What’re you thinking?
serious
“I had an idea to honor Georgie for the holidays.”

Oh, Flapper. That’s a wonderful thought. What is your idea?
proud
“My idea is to sponsor rescued ducks at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in memory of Georgie.”

Flapper… I’m so proud of you. That is a wonderful idea.
proud
“I think Georgie would like it.”

I do too, Flapper. I do too.

This year for the holidays, instead of gifts, we’re sponsoring a duck at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
logo
Flapper thought it would be a good idea, and we agree. It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, but also for a lot of animals.

cedar
Cedar the duck survived a predator attack that killed her mate. She ended up with severe injuries, but is recovering well at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

We hope Cedar has a good holiday. (Flapper has a little bit of a crush on her I think).

If you’d like to sponsor Cedar, or another duck, or even another animal, visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary’s gift page.

It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye

Oh Georgie… you’ve been gone since November 4th but I’m having trouble saying goodbye to you. I still wish there was something I could have done to save you, and I miss you terribly. I still can’t believe you’re really gone.

But you deserve a proper farewell, and you deserve to rest in peace. So here is your farewell, my Georgie girl.

sweety
Georgie came to us in August 2004 after surviving a dog bite and being rescued in West Seattle.

intimidator
She quickly decided that she was in charge around here, and Flapper was going to report to her.

couple
Georgie and Flapper settled down together and became a couple.

babies
In March 2005, Georgie and Flapper had 3 beautiful ducklings together, named Bingo Baloo, Miss Murphy and Kozmo Kirby.
babies

love
Georgie loved her ducklings very much, and they loved her as well. As many of you know, both Bingo Baloo and Miss Murphy passed away in December of 2005, and Kozmo Kirby passed away earlier this year. So Georgie outlived all of her children.

phoebe
Georgie made friends with new rescues Phoebe Kay and Petunia Peach after her girls passed on. But she thought they were a little flakey. She was not into Phoebe’s yoga lessons at all.

yoga
But she did try it. Georgie was always game for anything.

omalley
After we adopted O’Malley, Georgie and Flapper broke up and Georgie started hanging out with O’Malley. I think she felt he really spoke her language, and O’Malley considered himself a lucky duck to land a girl as pretty as Georgie.

attitude
Georgie was always big on attitude but short on bull$#!%. She was a straight-shootin’ duck who didn’t take guff from anyone.

no more photos
She was a beautiful, spirited, no-nonsense lady with a big heart.

never
Georgie? Our 4 years together went by too fast. I wish we had more time together and I miss you so much. I hope you are enjoying wormies wherever you are, and I hope you know I love you so.

Our friend Lisa made this card for us, and I hope with all my heart it’s true.

Toony Update

Petunia Peach was injured in the raccoon attack on Tuesday at 1pm that killed Georgie.
toony
Many people have asked how she’s doing since then, and the truth is… I’m just not sure.

Both Petunia and O’Malley don’t want to come out of their pen. O’Malley isn’t injured, he’s just traumatized and depressed. Because they’re both not acting normally, it’s difficult to tell how much of Petunia’s behavior is fear and how much is a symptom of her injuries.

Petunia has stitches for a bite wound on her shoulder, and her wings are damaged but should recover. The problem is that she has yellow urates with a bit of blood. That could be a sign of internal injuries or infection.

I took her back to the vet today for blood work and we’ll have the results on Monday. I’m hoping the results are good, and that she continues to improve. She could have an infection, or worse… she could have internal injuries. She is on new antibiotics as of today.

I really cannot tell if she’s getting worse or getting better. Please keep her in your thoughts.

In other news, we have 2 traps open during the daytime to catch the day raccoon. Because s/he returned the next day, the ducks are terrorized by that raccoon. We don’t want to catch just any animals, but definitely that one killer daytime raccoon.

Unfortunately last night we accidentally caught the opossum that lives in the yard.
opossum
He had to spend the day in the trap until the company I hired came to release him. I saw him released on Flapper cam and he scurried on his way, happy to be set free. Opossums can be a threat to duck eggs and sometimes ducks, but generally don’t cause a problem if you have predator-proof night pens.

Since our ducks are not safe even during the daytime now, we’ll be building a very large predator-proof pen so they can again enjoy the yard and pools but be safe from predators. This will take some time, but we’re almost ready to start thinking about it. Thanks to everyone for your offers of help and advice.

georgie
Losing Georgie has been very hard on me and the ducks, and everyone out there who cared for her. I owe her a fitting memorial soon, but I’m not quite ready to say goodbye yet… even though she’s already gone. So bear with me for a while longer, and thanks again for all the support.

How are the ducks?

You can imagine after losing Georgie yesterday in such a violent, horrible way, the ducks are traumatized and so am I.

close
They are sticking close to the house, and I sat outside with them for hours today.

mall
O’Malley seems the most upset, which makes sense to me. Georgie and O’Malley were together for a few years now, and O’Malley is also very sensitive.

choo
Chewy stayed right up against the house and kept a careful eye on the yard. This is a “safe” spot for the ducks, but only when I am home. When I’m at work, this just isn’t safe anymore.

petunia
Petunia broke many, many blood feathers on both wings in her fight against the raccoon, but this wing is the worst. It is bruised and swollen from the trauma.

teapot
She also has a few sutures on her shoulder but will hopefully heal. She threw up a bit today but Dr Ford thinks it was because of the antibiotics. We adjusted her dosage and she has been eating and drinking well otherwise.

group
When it got too cold to stay outside any longer, I sat right inside the glass door and the ducks stayed on the deck.

raccoon
Unfortunately the raccoon came back at exactly the same time as yesterday. I opened the sliding door and all the ducks ran inside the house very quickly.

stay
Flapper was unwilling to go back outside for quite a while, and the ducks really get terrified when they sense danger now. They were literally shaking with fear.

watch
Chewy kept watch over the yard, and after about an hour he decided he wanted to go back outside.

malltune
O’Malley and Petunia preferred to stay in the house, so they did.

Eventually, around 3:30pm, all the ducks went back outside and right into their predator-proof night pens. O’Malley is still the most terrified and upset, but I am hopeful that after a few days of safety in the pens, they will all feel more at ease.

They will not be out of their predator-proof pens unless I am with them any more. We will be building a much larger predator-proof day pen that encloses both of their ponds and surrounding area in the next few weeks or month. A few of you have emailed about donating money to the new pen or have donated to the Kozmo Kirby Memorial Fund in Georgie’s honor. I appreciate any donations to the fund, and those will be used strictly for rescues in the spring. I do not currently need financial help with the new pen, but I appreciate everyone’s offers so much. There are a few offers to physically help build the new pen, and I’m working to figure out how/when/what and will get back to everyone as soon as I can.

malley grieves
Thank you so much for all of the comments and tips and good thoughts and well-wishes. We all miss Georgie so dearly, but none more than O’Malley. Please send him your extra good thoughts tonight as he copes with the loss we all share.

Love,

Tiff

A Very Sad Day

sad
The day I hoped would never come is unfortunately here. We had a raccoon attack at Flapper’s house today at 1pm. Georgie was killed and Petunia was injured. Petunia is at the vet’s office and they called to say she will probably be okay, but it will take a few hours to know if she was shaken or not. Right now it looks good for her, but she is in a little pain.

It’s my fault that I took the risk to leave my ducks out during the day, and Georgie paid for that risk with her life. I am so sorry, Georgie. And I’m sorry for all the ducks having to be terrified by seeing that. I saw the raccoon on Flapper cam and made it home in 14 minutes, but it was not anywhere near fast-enough to save Georgie. The raccoon is obviously hungry and hung around even with me out there. I think our friend Dawn saw it all on Flapper-cam and I’m truly sorry to her for that as well.

I thought I was being careful to be home by 4pm in the winter to lock them up before dusk, but after 4 1/2 years of no incidents, my luck ran out.

I’m so, so sorry Georgie.

I’m not in a very good place right now so you won’t hear more from me this week. Rest assured Flapper, Chewy & O’Malley are safe and will not be out alone again, ever. We will have a much larger predator-proof pen built for them to use in the day, and of course they still have their predator-proof night pens. But it will take some time to build that, so they will be locked up for awhile.

I’m sorry to share such horrible news today, and especially sorry to sweet Georgie.
