Flapper Visits the Vet

Hey, Flapper. How’s your tail?
butt

“It’s pretty cute, don’t you think?”
belly

Ha ha, yes. It is cute. But that’s not what I meant. Let’s go see what Dr. Ford thinks about your tail, okay?
hmm
“Hmm… can we get french fries, too?”

You got it, Flapper. It’s a deal.
hot diggity
“Hot diggity. Let’s motor, Mom.”

Flapper went to the vet today to see how his cloaca/vent are doing after his surgery in August. He is still having some issues, and unfortunately, he always will. But he doesn’t have any infection and seems to be doing okay overall. His minor irritation is hopefully something we can manage for the long term. He is maintaining his weight and doesn’t seem to be in pain. He may always be slightly irritated by his vent, but it shouldn’t affect his quality of life.

French fries all around.

Juno Goes to Her Forever Home

Hey Juno? Chewy? It’s time to say goodbye. Juno is going to her forever home today.
Juno and Choo Choo
“Already? Okay let’s go!”

get her
“Let’s get her!”

Juno didn’t seem to mind going to her forever home today, and Chewy didn’t seem to mind losing his “shadow” either. Fling and Thor were a little wary of the new girl, and decided to make sure she knew who was boss.

thor bugs juno
“I’m the boss, okay?”

Thor decided to give Juno a half-hearted hard time for a few minutes. Thor chased Juno around the pen slowly and lightly pecked at the back of her neck. Nothing too bad. Looks like a good sign!

are we good?
“Are we all good then?”

After about 10 minutes of quacking and bossing Juno around, Thor decided they could all just be friends.

let’s eat
“Let’s eat!”

Then they all settled down to doodle together in the dirt, and make a mess of things like the expert mess-makers ducks are.

thank you ducks
Thanks!

Special thanks to Erin and family for taking Juno into their home. They also gave me these great carved wooden ducks to add to my collection on the mantle. When I left, Juno was happily doodling in the mud and by the time I got home, Chewy was happily preening on the lawn. Both made the transition much better than I expected, though I expected they would do fine.

It’s a very happy ending, and a new beginning, for little Juno. Oh! I should note… Fling & Thor are both girls! I could tell from their quacking as soon as I heard them. So Juno is the newest addition to an all girl flock. Erin said she’d update us on how Juno is doing in the coming days and weeks. So when I get an update, I’ll share it on the blog.

Happy doodling, girls!

To give you an idea of Juno’s size… Fling and Thor are both smaller than Flapper. They’re not huge ducks. Juno is just tiny. She is about the size of a true wild mallard. I think she is probably a mallard/call mix duck, or… something else i just don’t know about. She’s definitley not a full-bred pekin.

“Do you want to see my wings?”

Sure, Malley. Whoa! They’re looking good, kid!

“Wait. Let me show you the other side, too.”

Well this side looks great too, O’Malley. You look just perfect.

“Thanks, Mom.”

I love you, Malley. All the way down to your big dinosaur feet.

Flapper & family would like to wish heartfelt condolences to Pansy and Greg for the loss of their beautiful duck Quack Quack.
Quack Quack
Their special duck/kid Quack Quack lived to be 9-years and 18-days-old, which is really good for a ducky. Quack Quack is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed. All the best to Pansy and Greg during this difficult time. We’re so sorry for your loss.

Thanks

Thanks, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Kozmo thanked me for scratching all his head feathers tonight. He sits on my lap each evening and we scratch and fluff his head, cheeks, chin and neck. It seems to perk him up and I’ll bet it feels great. Now that his legs don’t work, he can’t do it himself. So I’m his scratch helper.

He is doing okay after his second biopsy. The wound was much bigger and will take longer to heal. But it’s healing. The results of his biopsy aren’t back yet. We know he has a huge mass, so I’m not quite sure if the results will matter at all. The vets didn’t sound very confident about being able to remove the mass. If they’re not confident, I’m not all that confident in letting them even try to remove it. Kozmo seems pain-free and happy-go-lucky, so that’s good enough for now.

When we get the biopsy results we’ll post another update.

Quacks,

Tiff

Happy Couple

Happy Couple, originally uploaded by tifotter.

Today I went to see Ms Bruiser, a beautiful pekin girl who we placed in a new forever home in early June. She and four other rescued ducks now live together in a great forever home. Ms Bruiser used to be very imprinted on humans and in fact had never seen another duck until she stayed at Flapper’s house for a few weeks in May. Now five weeks later… she knows she is a duck. It’s pretty cool to see her so well-adjusted and loving being a duck. She has a pekin boyfriend now who loves her dearly, and they are all doing great in their new forever home.

It was a little sad to see her less friendly with me, but it’s definitely for the best. She came over to see me very briefly, bit me, and let me pick her up and kiss her head. Then she went right back to her big boyfriend. It’s the perfect “Independence Day” because Ms Bruiser has truly learned to be a duck and not to depend on humans so much anymore. Happy Independence Day, Ms. Bruiser.

Chewy’s Cousins

Hey Chewy!
chewy

“Hold on, Stuffy. Mom is callin’ me.”
hold on

“Yeah, Mom?”
yeah mom
I got a photo from your young cousins. Do you want to see it?

“I have cousins?”
what
Yes. Well, kind of. Remember when Adrian came over to do research? He was the kid who wanted ducks of his own, but wanted to make sure he knew how to raise them right first. So he came over to meet Flapper and family and take notes. He didn’t have to take many notes though, because he already researched a lot on his own.

“I remember him. He’s a good egg.”
good egg

Well he and his family got all their preparations done. Like building a predator-proof pen and getting the right food and such. And then he got two ducklings of his own a few weeks ago. Now they’re all grown up. Take a look at them.
fling and thor
They look a lot like you, don’t you think Chewy?

“Wow. It’s like looking in a mirror. A really beautiful mirror.”
mirror
“They have great names, too. Very superhero ducks.”

I think so too, Chewy.

Congratulations to Adrian and family on their super-cool superhero ducks. Chewy is glad they turned out to be magpie ducks like him. With stripey feet and all!

It’s for a Good Koz

Hey Kozmo! Look! You got some more mail!
mail

“Yay! Bring it to me?”
yay
Of course buddy. Let me open it first.

Awwww… Kozmo. It’s you!
note
This is so sweet.

“Does it look like me? Let me see it.”
kozzy

It sure does, buddy.
comparison

“Wow, you’re right. It’s a very handsome drawing.”
handsome
Well you’re a handsome guy, Koz.

They also sent you a gift.
muffins
Wow! Homemade vegan muffins with sprouts. Yum!

“Mmmmmm muffins. Thank you!”
Mmmmm
They look delicious, Kozzy. Enjoy!

Thank you SO MUCH to Wayne and Dawn for making and sending Kozmo some very special vegan muffins. He ate a few bites and even shared some with the other ducks. You’re so thoughtful to send them. And it’s just great that they arrived the night before Kozmo goes back in for a re-do of his biopsy.

Kozmo had a big day today, too. I didn’t realize he could get himself around even though his legs don’t work. He pulled himself right into the pool while I was at work, and then pulled himself right back out — all with his beak! That strength is going to serve him well tomorrow in surgery. I guess he really wanted a swim. Thankfully he was able to get himself back out on his own. I never dreamed he could get around like that! Silly duck.

Anyway, thanks and quacks to Wayne & Dawn.

XOXOX

Love,

Kozzy and family

Kozzy

Yeah, Kozzy?
Flap
I just wanted to wish you a Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

That Kozzy… he’s a good boy.
flapping
He sure is, Flapper. And you’re a good Dad, too.

I picked some peonies for you.
peonies
And you can do whatever you want this afternoon.

Thanks. And thank you, Kozzy. I love you, son.
napper
I’m going to settle down for a good, long nap.

Ha ha that’s a great napping spot, Flapper. Sweet dreams.

And Happy Father’s Day to all good Dads.
